Michelia figo is commonly called port wine magnolia; however, this plant is not related to the Magnolia trees. It is a beautiful shrub that responds well to pruning and is suited for hedges and topiary or just planting in the garden as a small tree or for containers. The plant has small, glossy green leaves that produce fragrant flowers during spring and summer. The cream and port wine-coloured flowers are not excessively big like those of the magnolia trees and are not considered spectacular, but they have an amazing bubble gum aroma, which makes this plant a great hedge to grow near entertaining areas. During spring, the plant will be covered in flowers, making a beautiful display. This is a slow growing plant.
