The Magnolia loebneri 'Leonard Messell' was developed at Messel's garden in Sussex, Nymans. This plant has been given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This deciduous magnolia is a very elegant and attractive small tree that fills up with star shaped flowers with strappy petals. The flowers grow on bare stems before the leaves develop, making a gorgeous ornamental tree.
Plant in an area protected from heavy winds. Soil should have good drainage. Similar to most magnolias, slightly acidic soil is preferable.
