The upright Japanese holly, Ilex crenata 'Fastigiata, is a medium-sized, evergreen shrub with dense, glossy dark-green leaf. Ideally suited for use as a formal hedge. About 2.5m tall and 70cm wide when fully grown. The best growing conditions are full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in the spring. To maintain a tidy, bushy appearance, prune throughout the winter. Up till establishment, water well. Mulch thoroughly. The Japanese holly is an ideal plant for a beginner or easy-going plant to add to your collection.
