Developed in California, Olea europaea 'Californian Queen' is an extremely large table olive that can be eaten green or black. All gathered fruit must be processed before consumption. It has dark glossy green leaves with silver undersides and is 2 to 10 metres tall. Commercially available cultivars come in a wide range. As a feature specimen avenue or hedge, a highly hardy tree that thrives in Mediterranean climates looks fantastic. It can also be trained to develop into a standard or espalier. Olives are often quite hardy and low care; nevertheless, they flourish best in soil that drains well and receives enough water and fertiliser during the growth season. This type can be cut to the appropriate form through annual pruning or more frequent pruning for topiaries.
