The majestic Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Soft Tree Fern or Man Fern, is an evergreen tree fern native to eastern Australia. These grand plants can reach heights of up to 15m but typically grow around 4-5m in urban gardens with a dark green and roughly textured canopy spread out 2-6 metres in diameter! The unusual shapes vary from curved stems to multi headed ones - these stunning specimens produce new fronds in alternating layers for their fertile and sterile elements. It's fascinating that what appears like a trunk on this plant is merely made up of its previous growth; roots have formed through it allowing them access from the base into the soil below.
