Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' commonly called the banyan tree is a beautiful plant with oval-shaped matte green leaves and a greyish brown trunk. The banyan tree is an easy care indoor plant to grow. Outdoors, the banyan tree can become very large with aerial roots that drop down from branches and root in the soil making a large colony from a single tree and is a spectacular sight to see. Although native to India, the banyan tree is surprisingly well suited as an indoor plant in Australia as long as you can protect it from the frost. The banyan tree does best in a spot with bright indirect sun or early morning sun. Pruning will make the plant denser and more attractive. Water when the top 5 cm of potting mix is dry to the touch and never let your plant get water logged.

Ficus plants have extremely invasive roots so, in urban gardens, it is strongly advisable to keep them in pots or containers rather than planting them in the ground.
