Ficus microcarpa 'Hillii' is an adaptable Australian native, which naturally grows as a rain forest tree in Queensland. The curtain fig can survive in almost any environment. It may be pruned to take on any shape and is frequently cultivated as a conventional topiary or clipped hedge. Its rich, glossy green leaves provide the area a luscious appearance. When planting in a container, use only high-quality potting soil. Fertilise with slow release fertilizer in spring. Mulch once a year to help with weed control and water conservation. To get the shape you want, prune as required. Pest and disease problems should not exist in healthy plants. Ficus plants have extremely invasive roots so, in urban gardens, it is strongly advisable to keep them in pots or containers rather than planting them in the ground. Alternatively, keep them pruned small so the root system does not become large enough to cause damage. Ficus microcarpa 'Hillii' is a very popular hedge with its dense lush green appearance.
